Rebecca Alvarez Story: Happy To Be Here Podcast Show Notes

Rebecca Alvarez Story is a sexologist and the founder of Bloomi, a destination for clean intimate care products and tips. We recorded this episode at the end of May way before Roe v Wade was overturned. In considering putting out this episode or not, I decided now was actually the perfect time to put it out. In addition to questions around parenthood and how limited many are after the overturning of Roe v Wade, I think it also attempts to close the scope on how sexually active (and how much pleasure) woman can be. I believe that sexual pleasure is an act of rebellion and establishing our own agency over our bodies best we can right now. I’m excited for you to meet Rebecca and hear how she explains pleasure, desire, libido, masturbation, and how to talk to your partner about sex.

This Week's Links And More: June 17

This week has been a fruitful one. I am trying to get better with folding in real life into my every day work life. I forget sometimes that I have the flexibility to make my schedule whatever it needs to be. I took longer, outdoor lunch breaks this week. I went into the city for lunch with my boyfriend one day. I took more walks. I keep feeling like I’m on the cusp of a lot of new beginnings and I think my decisions are reflecting the peace I’m feeling in my day-to-day life. I hope you’re finding peace in your days too. Now, onto this week’s links.

David Kessler: Happy To Be Here Podcast Show Notes

David Kessler and I have come together a handful of times now to talk about grief. It’s an honor because when I was first truly diving into my own grief learning his were words that I turned to. He’s written books with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, like Life Lessons and On Grief and Grieving, and on his own, like Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief. He also leads grief.com and brings together a community of grievers who are all looking for the same thing — a sense of being understood. Throughout our conversation, I think we end up offering up a great primer on grief whether you’re on day 24 or year 24.

Some Words For When You Need To Feel Resettled

Start with an exhale. I know it feels like I’m about to lead a meditation, but I promise, I’m not. I just know that if you’re feeling unsettled, your breath was probably the first part of you that clenched. You started holding it in because maybe you thought it (or something else in your life) would run out. You can breath once now and then again in a second.

Adult Summer Reading List

In addition to this being the year I get a better handle of my finances, it’s also the year I learn to love books and reading again. Over the last few years, really through the thick of the pandemic, I got my heart burned by publishing. I worked on two different book proposals that never made it across the threshold and learned a lot about the back end of the publishing world that made me a bit jaded.

How I'm Taming My Money Anxiety

Financial literacy wasn’t as prevalent in my teens and early twenties as it is now. Whether I’m swiping through TikTok or scrolling on Medium, I’ll happen upon more than one writer or creator talking about financial freedom, generational wealth, budgeting, or getting paid what you’re worth. It’s amazing, but for someone who struggles with money anxiety (ehem) it can feel like a mountain you’ll never be able to climb.

This Week's Digest: June 3

This was a short week, after a long weekend in New Haven for a friend’s wedding. I was able to kickstart my summer challenge — I’ll be visiting 17 bookstores in 13 weeks — with a visit to Atticus Bookstore. Most of my week was spent getting caught up on work, after having had COVID the last few weeks. I’m really looking forward to resting and resetting some more this weekend. I’m at the door of a lot of big life and career decisions and this time around I’m trying to pace myself as I think through what’s next. It’s anxiety inducing, but necessary.

Helpful Resources As We Process What Happened In Uvalde, Texas

I’m a very empathetic person and this is especially true whenever I learn about someone’s grief. Learning about the passing of 19 children and 2 adults in Uvalde, Texas this week has been really hard to start processing. Right now, those who weren’t personally impacted by the loss of life in Uvalde are experiencing something called collective grief.

Taking My Own Advice

I started showing COVID symptoms last week and almost a week later I feel like I’m finally beginning to turn a corner. The first few days were very scary — I had a fever that didn’t really break until day 3 or 4, no matter what we did. Once it did, it felt like the biggest win and like I could see the other side. Now, I’m dealing with a lot of congestion, a wet cough, fatigue, and a ton of brain fog.

This Week's Digest: April 29

I’m knee-deep in prep for the launch of my new podcast, Happy To Be Here, and all that Mental Health Awareness Month will bring with it. It’s an exciting time, but a really stressful time for anyone who works in the mental wellness space. It’s actually quite ironic because in the month that’s dedicated to giving a platform to taking care our mental health, I find it the hardest to keep up with my own mental health routines.

Therapy For Beginners: Finding A Therapist

I shared a post on my IG that told the story of my first time in therapy. It ended up resonating with many and inspired me to start a series on the blog dubbed “Therapy For Beginners.” If I’m honest, I think we’re all beginners in therapy, no matter how long you’ve gone for, because of how much you continue to learn about yourself every single session.

Nonetheless, I do think that as a society we’ve gotten used to encouraging people start therapy without holding their hand through the real beginning stages.

Your Everyday Routine Is More Powerful Than You Think

I have lofty goals. Currently I’m working on launching courses, finishing a book proposal, coaching clients, and the list goes on and on. I aspire to meet all of the expectations I set for myself. Yet lately the most important expectation isn’t any of the work or life related ones I’ve set. It’s shifting my everyday routine to include my joy.

I know that sounds really sad, like “Vivian! Have you not been including your joy?”, but stick with me here. All of the things on my to-do list, they make me so happy. This book I’m working on? Lord, I cannot wait until I can hold it, hand it to someone, and say, “I promise, this will help.”

My September Mental Wellness Routine

Our mental health is impacted by our mental wellness routines. Whenever we overload our routines or fill them with things that don’t serve our current circumstances, we do more harm than good. Working in the wellness space I’ve realized that many people and brands push a more is more approach. I’ve been writing these wellness routine recap since January and over these few months have realized that the routines that serve me best are the most simple ones.
